This morning I went out to refill Dolly's water bowl. I picked it up as usual and started to carry it to the sink in the kitchen. For whatever reason I turned it upside down and was shocked to find a huge black widow living under it. Too bad I didn't think to grab the camera until after I had killed it, but at least I have proof with this picture. The scary thing is that I probably risked being bitten every time I picked up this water dish and I didn't even know it. Creepy.
Disclaimer: I'm really not about senseless bug killing but when the bug can potentially harm us and has hundreds if not thousands of babies just waiting to be born, I will quickly kill it. What other alternative is there? Nicely give it a boost over our fence?

*shudders* ... I so don't do spiders! I make hubby flush every one we find in the house!
Yeah, I don't really like them either.
I would have done the same thing! : )
I would of done the same thing. Then drowned them in bug spray. :D
Ew! And yikes! Good thing you found it before you had millions more of them!
Well your a lot sweeter than I, cuz I do kill bugs......all bugs. I can't stand them. =) I know what you mean though. I found 3 hobos today in my basement, where me and my girls sleep. Yucky. I killed them too. =) Creepy stuff. Glad you weren't bitten. Love your face.
We get these large creepy spiders downstairs; the females carry their egg sacs on their backs so when you squish the large spider, hundreds of little baby spiders escape and go in all directions. Now, you can't see the egg sac on top of the spider - it blends in so I keep some hairspray downstairs and I have to get the spider with this first before squishing it so the babies can't run away. Then I go for the vacuum. The filter gets dumped into our large garbage can directly. Thankfully I have not seen one of these for a few months now. Hopefully I got rid of the problem!
I wasn't planning on writing a book about it...
I am a bug killer. Sorry, but I am. I hate them and will squish them with no remorse.
Glad you or the kids did not get bit.
Dizzy Lizzy - Yuk! We don't get spiders like that here in CT. I'd scream and then be jumping for the bug spray.
I also kill bugs and spray them with whatever is handy and also stomp on them. Can't stand them.
I do not kill lady bugs though.
It must have really creeped you out when you saw the black widow and the egg sack thinking of what could have been to you or one of the family (or your cute little doggie).
I read the comment that you left on my daughter's blog. Thank you and that was so sweet of you.
I kill bugs - all bugs - every single one.
I hate black widows! We have a lot of them. Well, that is, before Mark sprayed. The scariest encounter I had with one is when a squished one fell out of Daniel's shoe as I was taking it OFF his foot!
Black widows are scary! I would have screamed.....very loud! Oh, and I am so glad your kids medical appts went well. Dennis is getting cute with all that meat on his bones, all of your kids are so adorable!
Ummm seriously?! I'm ALL about senseless bug killing! LOL That just made my skin crawl!
Here in Australia we have similar spiders to the black widow (also poisonous) called red backs, as they have a bright red line on their big black behinds. Over the years I've killed a couple, but it's our huge huntsman spiders that give me the heebi-jeebis; they tend to hang out in the house and car over the summer months. I'm absolutely paranoid about them, and get hubby to kill without fail.
I am *scared* of spiders. I know, I know...don't laugh, but I am! :) I like your disclaimer! Too funny!
You are SO my hero! I kill all spiders indoors, no questions asked. No other bugs, and I don't kill spiders out of doors, but then again there are no dangerous spiders where I live. If I saw a black widow spider, I would kill it if it was the last black widow spider on earth. I mean, I donate to World Wildlife Fund and all, but my environmental consciousness doesn't extent to poisonous spiders sharing my habitat. It's either them or us!!!! Good for you!
"I don't like spiders and snakes..."
Maleri, what are hobos?
Dizzie Lizzie, that is really freaky about the babies on the back.
Kristen, I would have so freaked out too!
I am so glad I am not alone with the bug thing. I was half expecting for someone to write how they keep one as a pet or something.
OH MY....I would have screamed and screamed some more... I don't do spiders (or any bug or snake) at all!!!
Glad you didn't get bit.
kill away when it comes to something that can harm you or your family.
♥ i would have killed it too. Big difference between a non poisinous spider and one that can hurt someone! I would ahve just died thinking of all the time it had been picked up and not knowing the spider was there... makes me shiver! :)
When I told Grandpa about Dolly's water dish, he said he saw a few black widows out by the pool pump. So ya might wanna check out there.
Call me a killer, but I see one, I squish one! My mom prefers to use Raid, but I start whining that "mmmoooooommmmm it's sufffferrriiinnnggg!!!!". I hate seeing the convulsions post spraying....*shudders* I prefer to squish it before it knows what hit it! Whenever my mom has to go outside for something after dark, she brings her can of Raid and exlaims, "Whhattch out, spidahhs! She's locked n' loaded!"....just another quirky fact about my family!
Sorry, getting into a novel here! I so need some socialization outside of the children's hospital!
Oh you heartless thing! I can't believe you killed that poor widow spider!
JK of course!
