One Busy Saturday

I had been telling the kids all week that we would decorate the tree, but one of the kids always seemed to be off somewhere doing something (Caleb tried out two days for basketball and made it) so I kept telling them not today. Well, today was the day, do or die, so we got up and decorated the tree before the older kids went off to ring a bell in front of a grocery store to raise money for a Christmas outreach program.

Jonny may be little, but he reached way up high to put on his ornaments.

Annalyn was so excited for Daddy to put up the angel.

Dennis loved going through the ornaments. Isn't his little foot adorable?

Adam wasn't in the decorating mood, but at least he kept us company.

Here is everyone putting on the final touches.

Annalyn was very happy to find her ornament that she made us two years ago. She commented on how time flew and she couldn't believe that this would be her third Christmas with us.
The tree may be a disorganized, modge podge of clutter to the untrained eye, but to me, it is just beautiful.
************************

It was nice to see Adam and Caleb spend some quality time with William. He can be very annoying to them, but they also know because John and I stress how important it is for them to be someone he can look up to. They may not always like all of their siblings, but we are a family and they are stuck with each and every one of them, including John and I. And yes, I let them do Poppers in the house.

After, Caleb got out some of the old fireworks he had saved from Fourth of July and he went outside with William and lit them. It made William's day, I'm sure.

Today was the day that John and the boys tackled Christmas lights too.
William was a great helper!
When John was outside, he noticed that it was a beautiful day with a nice breeze so he suggested that Adam and Caleb assemble their kites that they got last Christmas.

But no matter how hard they all tried, the wind was not strong enough to lift the kites high into the air.
Oh well, it was fun watching them try.

Since we are going to a Christmas Soup Party tomorrow, us girls spent a good part of the day making labor intensive borscht. When I make a batch, I make a big batch!

While we chopped we talked about boys and how important it is to not let them consume your whole life when you like one. It was a wonderful opportunity to talk to them, and I am realizing that in order to keep the lines of communication open I need to make sure that I am sensitive yet understanding to their feelings. Boy, my girls are growing up.

Sveta is always proud of how fast and safe she opens cans.
She opened up a can of diced tomatoes, beets, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, tomato paste, and three cans of tomato sauce. She was tired at the end.
Here is the finished product--- hot and steamy!
Julia is proud that she can tell everyone tomorrow that she helped make the soup!
Tomorrow I will post pictures of the fun outing we had tonight!

I LOVE your tree because mine looks alot like it. It certainly isn't the fancy tree from Macy's but I wouldn't want it any other way. We have ornaments on our tree that are well over 25 years old that some of the older boys made. Precious. Our angel is a paperplate angel made by my son 20 years ago in Cubbies! I loved being a part of your day via photos. Thanks for sharing and the soup, never had it, but it sure looked good. Blessings to you!

Am I up early or were you up late! LOL

What a fun day. We like our modge podge tree too. It is covered with home made stuff and a few newer things, but the kids LOVE when they see their works of art from the year before.

This is Erika's 3rd Christmas with us too! YEA!
Sarah's 4th and Anna's 5th.

It is my 50th Christmas. :)
I think I need a silver ornament for that one.

I love Dennis's little foot in your picture with his little baby toe sticking up.

Children are such a blessing.

The soup looks great too.
And oh my, how our girls are growing up.

Have a wonderful day.

Christine, a hodge podge of ornaments are the BEST on a tree, IMO. To our family, they help represent different stages of our lives. I wouldn't want a tree that had matching, co-ordidnated ornaments. Each ornament on our tree has sentimental meanings and that is JUST the way we like it!

To add to the Christmas festivitiees, I woke to several inches of SNOW!!!!!!! The rest of our family are still asleep and the snow will be a welcome surprise to each of them. The only bummer with the snow is that we haven't got our snow tires on each of our vehicles...by the time we discovered the lug nuts had been tighteneed TOO snugly, the tire place was closed.

Have a blessed Sunday!

What a wonderful day! But, that doesn't look like my borscht recipe at all! A Russian friend told me that every region in Russia seems to have a different way of making it. Lucky for me my first teacher was from the region that pretty much chops up a bunch of root vegetables and a head of cabbage, cooks it all in beef broth and calls it good. Amazing how good that really is! I sometimes leave out the beets and make the same dish; we call it "Root Soup" and everyone likes it.

The more labor-intensive version that I have learned since, does involve keeping the beets out until last, i.e. cooking them in a separate pan, and adding fresh dill and parsley. Adding the beets last is the secret to pretty color and the fresh herbs, both in the cooking, and sprinkled on top is the key to amazing taste. But beans?

I have envied you this last couple of years....having all your chicks in your nest. It is only just beginning - everyone going their separate ways. I'm glad you got everyone together for the tree-decorating.

Comment moderation! How sad is that? I need the instant gratification of seeing my comment. :(

Oh, I love your tree..it's so pretty. We always put our tree up as a family and I really miss that. I didn't have girls, but always imagined being in the kitchen with them..talking about boys. You are so blessed and so are you children. Have a wonderful, wonderful day.

Oh, by the way, I have been enjoying Julias blog. She is quite the writer. You have some extremely smart kids.

Great pictures! Looks like decorating the tree was a great time. I do it by myself, I can't deal with the two boys fighting. :)

What a beautiful Christmas tree! Ours looks like that too--it may have a hodge podge of ornaments, but each one has a memory attached to it. Congratulations to Caleb on making the basketball team!

You tree looks awesome! I love it. Could I ask a question? Remeber how I left the message saying your blog had really helped me to feel God and try to grow close to him? Well, when you were starting to believe and find out about your faith, did you ever doubt it? I am not sure what I feel/think at the moment. Thanks.

A family tree with lots of memories for each ornament is special. The kids can take their special ornaments when they go off on their own and start their own traditions. I still give my daughter an ornament each Christmas and I always give my granddaughters an ornament too. I used to do that with an evergreen tree in our living room. In other rooms, I had tabletop artificial ones that had themes and my daughter had one next to her bed with paper teddy bears and Swedish straw ornaments. I don't do that anymore as it was a full day and evening task to decorate the whole house.

I love your tree. Like your family, we cherish the homemade ornaments and every year it is fun to pull them out as we decorate the tree.

Your borscht looks yummy!

I love your tree! I am NOT impressed with department-store-perfect trees where everything matches... I like to walk up to a family's Christmas tree and read their history in the branches!

I wish someone would have told me when I was a child/teen not to let boys consume my every thought/day. Great advise.

Christine, great minds think alike! We did our tree yesterday too, and Nastia was singing ( er, screaming) Christmas hymns at the top of her lungs the entire time..lol. By the way, one of the first pics you posted cracks me up...notice how your stocking holders seem to spell out "oh oh oh" in this picture?... perfect sentiment for a crazy morning of tree decorating !

Your tree looks very much like the ones I remember as a child and something like the ones we usually have.

I just love your blog. Seeing the kind of mom that you are reminds me of my Mammy! She had ten children and she was amazing at keeping things going even with a house full of people. You are inspiring, to say the least!

The soup looks awesome and your tree is beautiful! Is it me or is Christmas just a little more special when there are new family members to celebrate with you?

Your christmas tree looks great!
Your day sounds like fun. I love the way you use time in doing things together to talk to your children - they will be more the wiser for it!

My real birthday is actually not 'till Wednesday but thanks so much for the birthday wishes, Christine! BTW, all credit for the cake goes to my favorite grocery store, Costco. :-) I could never come up with something like that!

I thought I posted a comment this a.m., but maybe it didn't go through.

I think your tree is great. I love hodge podge trees.
I also think Dennis's toes are very cute. :)
I love it that you and the girls made soup and had girl time to talk.

I am enjoying those talks at home too. :)

Yesterday, they played, "clean up" and cleaned the entire attic! YEA.
The guys would have never thought to do that. :)

WOW, you have such a busy home, I think I would LOVE that! There is only 3 of us, and I really wish I could have more kids around. I can not have more but maybe do what you have done or foster care. You always hear all the bad story's, but not with you. It is a beautiful story!! Thank you for taking a peek into my mundane life.
